Sustainable Utility Infrastructure Coming to Hinton, Alberta
Friday, February 12, 2007
Hinton , Alberta — A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between the Town of Hinton, Alberta and Corix Utilities Inc to explore opportunities for the long term operations and management of sustainable utili ty infrastructure for Hinton’s Innovista Industrial Park. Innovista, being developed by the Town of Hinton, is Canada’s first new eco-industrial park. It is being built in adherence to three principles : economic advantage, social responsibili ty; and ecological sensitivi ty.
Eco-Industrial parks offer an advantage over traditional designs by: reducing industrial fresh water consumption, leveraging the use of renewable energy sources, and by creating an industrial area that people actually want to work in. These aspects create an industrial park that costs less to operate and allows industries to be more effective at retaining employees.
“This is an opportuni ty to partner with others to create a cost effective and innovative utili ty system which enhances the already established sustainable principles of the park”, said Hinton Mayor, Glenn Taylor.
Part of this commitment includes servicing the site with cost-effective and environmentally sensitive infrastructure. The Town is experienced with utili ty partnerships, with its water and wastewater treatment provided by Hinton Wood Products - A Division of West Fraser Mills Ltd.
"Corix is excited about working with the Town of Hinton on the Innovista development,” said Eric van Roon, VP Business Development, for Corix. “We work in partnership with communities like Hinton and others to develop sustainable solutions, to guarantee the highest safe ty standards, to provide the best possible service and most cost-effective delivery of water and energy products and services." Corix is a Canada-based communi ty utili ty infrastructure provider of innovative solutions in the water, wastewater and energy sectors.
Hinton Alberta is the first Canadian communi ty to develop an eco industrial park from the ground up. The Town is working with Eco-Industrial Solutions Ltd, a Vancouver-headquartered consulting firm specializing in the design and development of eco industrial parks.
The Town of Hinton is located along the Athabasca River, 2 9 km from the east gate of Jasper National Park and 287 km west of Edmonton.
