SFU Community Trust Undertakes Feasibility Study for Sustainable Energy Project at UniverCity
Monday, November 24, 2008
As part of its commitment to sustainable development, Simon Fraser Community Trust is partnering with Corix Utilities to examine opportunities for the development of a sustainable energy system at UniverCity, the model sustainable community adjacent to Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, BC.
The feasibility study will explore options for providing heat and domestic hot water to new housing projects planned for the UniverCity community. Dale Mikkelsen, Manager of Planning and Sustainability at the Trust, is optimistic about the potential benefits such a system could provide to the environment and the community. “The goal of the study will be to identify a sustainable energy system that will allow for significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions while also providing long-term benefits to UniverCity residents,” said Mikkelsen.
Corix, a BC based company with over 65 years experience in provision of all aspects of sustainable community utility infrastructure systems, was selected through a competitive process to undertake a feasibility study to seek out cost effective, long term, environmentally responsible alternative energy options for a Neighborhood Utility Service which will provide heat and domestic hot water to the residents of Phase 3 and 4 of the UniverCity development.
The Trust has chosen Corix due to its long established expertise and its proven track record of successful sustainable energy projects, including the Sun Rivers Resort Golf Community near Kamloops, the Dockside Green development in Victoria, and other district energy systems across Canada.
Located in Burnaby B.C., UniverCity is located adjacent to Simon Fraser University. Its spectacular forest setting, easy access to the vast recreational and educational resources of SFU, and its commitment to the principles of sustainable development have made UniverCity one of Greater Vancouver’s most attractive new communities in which to live, work, and learn.
