Water Intake Extension and Boil Water Notice

Apr 05, 2024

UPDATE: April 22

Construction to extend the water intake pipe has begun today, with our contractor mobilizing a barge, anchors, and pipeline to the CLE boat launch. The expected duration of this work is 1-2 weeks, and the Boil Water Notice will begin on April 24. The Notice will be rescinded after the construction is complete and testing determines the water safe to drink.

UPDATE: April 16

Construction to extend the water intake pipe has been postponed due to material delays and now is scheduled to begin the week of April 22 with an expected duration of 1-2 weeks. The Boil Water Notice is planned to begin April 24 and be rescinded after the construction is complete and testing determines the water safe to drink.

Construction to extend the water intake pipe further into Okanagan Lake is scheduled to begin the week of April 15, with an expected duration of 1-2 weeks. This work, will require the issuance of a Precautionary Boil Water Notice, planned to begin April 17. The Notice will be rescinded after construction work is completed and testing determines the water safe to drink.

We apologize for this inconvenience and greatly appreciate your patience.

The purpose of this work is to improve the source water quality for Canadian Lakeview Estates residents. A source water study completed by a consultant confirmed the water quality has suffered due to a shallow intake in Okanagan Lake. The existing intake is installed approximately 110 m into the lake at a depth of 7 m. The study recommends the intake be extended approximately 180 m further into the lake for a target depth of 30 m with a resulting total intake length of 290 m.

The improved source water quality should reduce/eliminate the need for future Water Quality Advisories due to turbidity. In addition, the improved source water quality may reduce treatment requirements and allow for more cost-effective treatment options, as required by the Interior Health Authority for surface water sources.

Precautions During a Boil Water Notice

During a Boil Water Notice, tap water used for the following purposes should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute prior to use.

  • Drinking and ice cubes
  • Liquids or food (e.g. tea or soup) that will not be boiled for at least one (1) minute
  • Washing fruits and vegetables being eaten raw
  • Brushing teeth or cleaning dental and medical appliances
  • Preparing baby food and infant formula
  • Bathing infants

Adults, adolescents, and older children may shower, bathe, or wash using tap water, but should avoid swallowing water. It’s recommended to sponge bathe infants if using tap water. Tap water may be used for dishes washed by machine but add bleach to water used for dishes washed by hand. Water used for other household purposes does not need to be boiled.

The Boil Water Notice will be rescinded once the water has been demonstrated safe to drink. Please check your emails or this News & Notices page for updates. Should you have questions, please contact Corix Customer Care.
