Continued Poor Water Taste and Odour

Dec 23, 2020

We've received inquiries from residents regarding the reoccurring earthy taste and odour in their drinking water.

Customer Care Testing

As was reported in October, this was determined to be caused by algae blooms (geosmin) in the Bow River, and has affected several area communities. Geosmin algae produce an earthy odour that is unpleasant, but does not pose any health risk, and Harmony’s water remains safe to drink.

Colder weather was expected to diminish the propagation of this algae, but as it is naturally occurring, and over a wide area, it’s difficult to predict with certainty when water will return to normal.

Our staff continue to monitor the situation, including periodic testing as required by provincial health authorities. We thank you for your patience.
