$1 Million Raised at Corix Water Products’ 20th Annual Golf for Kids Charity Classic
Monday, September 10, 2018 – On Saturday, September 8, 2018, Corix Water Products held its annual Golf for Kids Charity Classic at the Westin Bear Mountain Golf Resort and Spa in Victoria, BC.
The tournament reached a major milestone this year, marking the 20th year the tournament has raised money and awareness for BC kids in need. Thanks to the commitment and outpouring of generosity from players, sponsors, volunteers, and philanthropists, this year’s event raised another $1 million, matching last year’s record.
More than a charity golf tournament, the Golf for Kids Charity Classic is the most successful single day fundraising tournament in Victoria, BC, bringing together golfers, volunteers, community advocates, and devoted youth in support of BC kids and their families.
Making dreams come true
This year’s tournament kicked off with the Cownden family, from Northridge Excavating Ltd., presenting a cheque for $30,000 for 20 years of amazing service by tournament co-hosts, Dale Douglas and Murray Stewart, while two past Dream recipients, Andrei and Braiden, donated $1,100 and $7,020 respectively towards filling one of this year’s Dreams.
Tournament participants also heard from Tracey, mother of twin boys, Asher and Nolan. During her emotional speech, she expressed how cerebral palsy has affected the boys and her family, and how the Bear Essentials program, under the Help Fill A Dream Foundation, has helped fill the gaps for equipment costs that government programs don’t cover completely or at all. Thanks to the generous donations of tournament participants, they now have a new dream to look forward to – a family trip to Florida during Christmas break – an opportunity for her family to have fun and to celebrate what they have had to overcome since the twins’ births.
“Tracey set the stage for the day with her remarkable speech,” said Murray Stewart. “Her words were so moving and reminded us about the impact that everyone’s generosity has towards making the dreams of young children come true.”
Funds raised are dedicated to local charities and programs
Raising money is only the first part. It is equally as important to ensure we invest this money with the right people and organizations. Our job is to help fund great organizations who do excellent work to support kids in our communities. Over the past 20 years, the Help Fill A Dream Foundation has been our feature charity. Through this successful partnership, Golf for Kids has provided the funding for making 50% of all the dreams come true for kids and their families.
This year, $210,000 was raised during the evening banquet to fulfill 21 dreams, some of which included trips to Disney World, Hawaii, Australia, and a meet and greet with a pop band.
“Each and every year, the incredible people at Golf for Kids – players, volunteers, sponsors, and special guests – surprise us with the extent of their generosity and thoughtfulness. It just keeps getting bigger and better”, said Craig Smith, Help Fill a Dream Foundation Executive Director. “Our growth is intricately linked to the success of Golf for Kids. We have grown up together and assisted thousands of Island children as a result. In addition to the money raised, the whole team at Golf for Kids provide us with support, encouragement, and inspiration throughout the year. Humbly, we say thank you to all even though it never seems to be adequate enough to express our heartfelt gratitude.”
Based in Victoria, the Help Fill A Dream Foundation provides hope, help and happiness for Vancouver Island children with life-threatening conditions.
