Corix Water Products Contracted for Balfour Water System Universal Metering Program

Thursday, August 9, 2018 – The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) has contracted Corix Water Products (Corix) to supply and install new water meters and meter reading equipment as part of the Balfour Water System Universal Metering Program.

Starting in August 2018, Corix will install new water meters for all residential and commercial properties throughout Balfour. Implementation of the program will take approximately three months, with completion estimated for Fall 2018.

As part of the program, residents and businesses will receive upgraded metering technology with advanced metering analytics (AMA) capabilities including leak detection, backflow monitoring, and remote connectivity capabilities. The new meters have the ability to allow customers to access a consumer portal to monitor water usage and use that information to discover possible low-flow leaks that need to be addressed. This will reduce excessive water consumption and unnecessary expenses.

FAQs

  • When will installations take place?
Meter installations will take place starting in August. Corix installers will work Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm PST, and Saturdays from 9am to 5pm PST and will be wearing Corix branded uniforms and identification.

  • Who will pay for my new water meter?
The RDCK is responsible for the cost of the meter equipment and installation. Provided you comply with the installation, you will not be charged for your new meter or the installation.

  • Where will the meter be installed?
Your new meter will be installed either inside the residence/business or in a water meter pit at the property line. Please ensure the area surrounding your incoming water service and shut-off valve are easily accessible and clear of any obstructions.

Note: An adult at least 18 years old must be home at all times during the inside installation.

  • Can I opt-out of the upgrade?
No. Water meters are owned by the RDCK and any owner, tenant, or occupant must allow access to read, inspect, or replace the meter.

  • Can I install the meter myself?
No. Corix Water Products has a contract to supply and install the water meters and the reading equipment device. Every installer has been specially trained to install water meters.
  • How will my new water meter be read?
Your new meter will allow the RDCK to read your usage remotely over the LTE cellular network. The RDCK will not need to visit your property to obtain a reading. The only exception will be if the meter requires maintenance.

  • Can I read my new water meter?
Yes! You can also manually read the dial on the face of your meter. This meter has capabilities to allow users to access an online customer portal, where water usage can be monitored as well as provide residences the ability to detect possible leaks in their system. This portal, called EyeOnWater, will require consent from residents and will be introduced to the residences of Balfour at a later time.

Note: The EyeOnWater® consumer portal will not be available at the start of the program. We will provide an update when the app becomes available.
  • Who will maintain my new water meter?
RDCK staff will maintain the water meters at no cost to the customer, provided reasonable care is taken.

Important: It is illegal to tamper with a water meter.

  • Who do I call if I have problems with my new meter?
